PROJECT MANAGER: Alumni Program

Building Up is Toronto’s leading registered pre-apprenticeship program, and a non-profit social contractor, that uses renovations and affordable housing development as an opportunity to train and employ individuals with barriers to enter the construction sector. With a collaborative and passionate staff of 40, we support 380 trainees and alumni annually. Resulting in 80% going to build full time careers in the construction trades.

Role Description: 

The Project Manager will lead the Alumni team in the career advancement of our Alumni, the majority of which will be apprentices. The key goal is to support and track these apprentices in obtaining journeyperson status. This is a newer initiative planned to grow significantly over the next few years. The successful candidate must be comfortable managing a caseload along with managing their team, and helping implement a strategy for growth in the division. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Coach Alumni 

  • Manage 50 to 100 active alumni cases, by providing individualized support in career progression and barriers. Along with supporting the launch of a Mentorship Program that sets Alumni up for success
  • Identify alumni needs and connect them to wrap-around support as needed in different sectors, and ensure accurate up-to-date alumni notes are kept and submitted for various funding reports. This requires tracking alumni’s hours, wages, and their apprenticeship level and progression.
  • Observe and facilitate participant classes to connect with trainees as part of the case management team and support participants who are looking to change careers in applying for new positions
  • Become an expert in trades career pathways, specifically apprenticeships. 

Program and Project Management 

  • Manage Alumni program subdivision team to ensure alumni success and accurate data is updated. 
  • Work collaboratively with a larger team to redefine the system for long-term trainee outcomes.
  • Guide alumni coaches and support staff growth in a changing environment to ensure participants are successful along their entire pathway.
  • Develop systems and tools to support program participants to advance in their apprenticeship pathway and proactively implement with teams across the organization. 
  • Proactively liaise with Union/employer partners to track upcoming next level classes and ensure qualified alumni are registered and build stakeholder partnership agreements for long-term Alumni success. 
  • Manage the calendar of employer partner next steps classes and intakes and keep alumni coaches updated. 
  • Weekly meetings, record keeping on alumni classes, support other departmental priorities as needed. 

Required Experience & Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in roles that combine the expertise below
  • 3+ years of work, volunteer or lived experience working with marginalized individuals facing a wide variety of barriers
  • Experience in Project management, Grant writing and report writing 
  • Budget development and management 
  • Partnership management/ stakeholder engagement 
  • Strong technology skills in quickly using various software programs such as Google Workspace (Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Meets), Zoom, scheduling software
  • Strong understanding of anti-racism, anti-oppression, health and safety, accessibility and other issues affecting LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC communities in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Entrepreneurial experience or Construction sector experience an asset 
  • Crisis intervention and conflict management skills, an asset 

Details: 

  • Wage: $ 60,000 to $75,000 
  • Working hours: 40-44 hours/week (with flexibility on weekends) 
  • Reporting to: Director of Career Case Management 
  • Work model: Hybrid, 25% in office

CAREER CASE MANAGER: CCMs

Role Description:

The Career Case Manager works directly with Building Up trainees to provide individualized support and coaching that prepares them for successful careers in the construction trades. 

CCMs first build trust and rapport, then individualized career plans with the trainees to meet their unique needs and goals. The ultimate goal is to connect trainees with sustainable careers in the trades that sets the trainee and the employer up for success. 

Therefore, a successful CCM must have a deep understanding of their trainees and the various career options available in the trades space. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Career Case Management (80%): 

  • Maintain a caseload of ~25 participants with the key outcome being that +80% of trainees are successfully placed into sustainable trades careers within our 16 week program.
  • Support trainees in achieving individual goals and applying to trades career opportunities where the placement sets both the participant and the union up for success
  • Review report cards, and collaborate with the program and social enterprise teams to stay up to date on your trainees in-class/on site. And coach trainees where needed to hold them accountable to their goals.
  • Coordinate career support for participants, based on approved budgets for placements, such as union dues, class fees, tools, work clothes, transportation.
  • Follow up with participants one-on-one after their placement monthly (mostly after work hours). Followed by a formal process to hand over successfully placed trainees to alumni coaches to mark the formal exit from the caseload.
  • Work with participants that meet re-entry requirements to place them in a more suitable trade when the placement is not working out. 
  • Develop 90 day plans, and alternative strategies for those that are not placed within 16 weeks.
  • Ensure accurate up to date data, weekly notes, and progress in career plan through various Building Up systems and templates. Submit notes and stories as required for funding reports.
  • Attend weekly meetings, support the team with intake interviews and take on tasks as assigned by the Manager or Director of Case management. 

Expert on Trades Career Pathways (20%) 

  • Learn about all Building Up Employer Partners, and available career opportunities in the trades. Understand the minimum requirements, what the pathway looks like and what it takes to be successful. 
  • Observe and facilitate career workshops for trainees that prepares them for the construction career pathway. 
  • Attend multiple employer visits and networking events every quarter as needed. 

Required Experience & Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in roles that combine the expertise below
  • 3+ years of work, volunteer or lived experience working with marginalized individuals facing a wide variety of barriers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to manage conflict resolution 
  • Proficient with Google Sheets, Docs, and Drive
  • Experience working in people-centered environment, with strong critical understanding of anti-racism, anti-oppression, accessibility and other issues affecting LGBTQ2S+ and BIPOC communities in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Mentorship, career counseling and/or coaching experience, an asset, 
  • Experience working in the trades, or with trades unions and employers, an asset

  • Working hours: 40-44 hours/week (with some exceptions)
  • Reporting to: Manager of Career Case Managers 
  • Work model: Hybrid, 50% in office
